I also love the idea that she could have been an unwilling traitor, due to her family history.
It really is as you said. Grim Tales really is a story about legacy. And sometimes that legacy is what dooms the world.
I also wouldn't have minded if the traitor was Mandy. Not trough action but rather through inaction. That maybe she knew the plan was coming to fruition but she simply didn't care enough to inform her former colleagues. I can see HIM telling the heroes as such, framing her as a traitor to earth while Mandy does nothing to defend herself because she simply does not care. At least that is how I read the page that mentioned a traitor and just assumed it would be Mandy.

There is something I dont quite get. In your original draft of this story, would you have gone in depth about the Reaper race? In the current story, there is this whole new plotline involving the relationship between death and life with the reapers and the life givers.
Was that something you would have gone in depth with? The nature of Reapers?

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Mother Arrive

Bleed refused because to accept me back would be to admit he made a mistake in firing me to begin with. And a prideful, stubborn git such as him couldn't bear to bring himself to do so. Plus, his enablers like Nooma didn't help matters.

Oh, I answered who the traitor was on a previous page. May have been a PPGD page actually. The traitor was Princess Morbucks. Just as the threat of world-ending demonic invasion brought the heroes back together, it also drew in former foes throwing their weight, knowledge and skill behind a greater cause.

Except, like all things in this comic, this was a tale of Legacy. And the Morbucks family legacy came home to roost. Despite all she'd done to try and redeem herself, it ended in disaster. Perhaps she wasn't a willing traitor. But Princess Cienna Morbucks doomed humanity all the same.

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Mother Arrive

Now this...This is some quality writing. You can really tell there is passion here.
How Bleed could look and this and say Nah, its beyond me. This truly is a dark timeline. I cant help but notice you keep who the traitor is very vague. Why is that? Just who is this traitor?

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Mother Arrive

Amazing Stuff. And how did that betrayal lead to the end of the world?

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Mine

You're on the money.

I did have another major OC lined up for later on, someone with a vendetta against Mandy who doesn't wield power in a traditional sense but nonetheless wants the Queen of Death to fall from her lofty throne. This character is called Padmavati, a mysterious woman with a lotus-themed attire and very Indian-inspired features. Soft spoken, dark of skin with shining eyes, clearly NOT human but something close to it. Her surname, Kadru, hints as to what she REALLY is.

She would have been someone who crossed paths with Mandy many years prior, much like Ælber the character based on my wife. She'd be in league with other powerful characters from Grim Adventures lore, looking to undermine Mandy in diabolical ways. Just because the Council ultimately averts war doesn't mean others won't try to launch their own...

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Mother Arrive

God I love this page... every time I come back here I gotta stare at it for a moment. There's something to be said about the effectiveness of a single, full-page panel to get something momentous across.

Grim Tales is a story of legacy, and HIM's sole objective was to corrupt and destroy the girls' own. His denizens and benefactors hungered for some mortal spoils and he obliged them whilst setting out personally against the Powerpuffs. His original target was Bubbles (early concepts were for Mimi to be Bubbles' daughter) but he went a little too strong on that, resulting in permanent damage to Bubbles as a result - not necessarily on a physical level, mind you. With the group fractured, friends and family dead and the world of heroes in grave jeopardy, Buttercup did a lot of stepping up into a role she wasn't quite ready for. Torn between hero duties and caring for the loved ones she hadn't already lost, Blossom came forward to make a Deal with the Devil. She worked out HIM's motive early on and decided to cut to the chase. If you stop leading this demonic invasion against the world I swore to protect, then you can have me.

HIM accepted.

Of course, there's always fine print. HIM stepped away, but he didn't close the door behind him on the way out. Every so often, beings strong enough to break the barriers came through and threatened the world again. What remained of the heroes stood their ground but every time, the numbers dwindled and more of the world was left a smoking husk in their wake.

Dexter led a project to seal the world off from the underworld (and all other realms) for good, isolating Earth from all other planes of existence even at the expense of heroes who may draw their power from other dimensions. Not all heroes fire lasers or punch real hard. But the traitor sabotaged the group from within as their own Deal with the Devil reared its head and the smartest minds lost everything, leaving Earth stuck in the mud, the doors to Hell widening further and dooming the mortal realm to endless nightmares until HIM finally came back to claim what was his.

What happened to Earth after that was never clear. Some thing it's still out there, dead and lifeless and stuck, mired and abandoned at the overlap of reality boundaries. Some thing it was sealed off for good by higher powers before the demonic could overrun even more realities. And some think there's still life there, waiting to be reached and rescued if only someone had the sufficient power to build a bridge back there once again.

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Mother Arrive

Amazing Stuff. Seeing as HIM got his daughter killed, cant imagine he has any good standing with HIM.
So aside the OC based on your wife who knew Mandy, did you have any other OC characters planned for the story? Maybe some supporting cast to Jr and Minnie? Outside of Mimi I mean.

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Mine

I think franchise bloat was already a big problem and I was quite happy for GT to remain at the extent it was at. Not to say other important people wouldn't turn up but rolling entire universes' worth of lore into GT wasn't needed. Hell, I was against Chi joining partly because of all the Jack backstory (Jackstory?) that would come with her, and has hugely changed in the time since her introduction. But mostly cos I knew she'd hog the spotlight and that Bleed made critical decisions in line with his incel status.

The Highlord Council would have been a big overlap of franchises that would have implied a much bigger universe at play. We already dipped into Abadeer (Adventure Time), Malebolgia (Spawn), the Satan we saw hanging with Billy (BOTH would have shown up in this sequence) and we also have the Ghosts from Danny Phantom. I wanted to also include the same Boogeyman we got in Afterbirth, Sartana of the Dead from El Tigre and a certain giant demonic creature from the DC Universe. Also in attendance would be the Paradiso Delegation, which includes various heavenly representatives such as Redeemer (also Spawn), Archange Gabriel (SkullBoy) and an original character based on my then-fiance and now-wife who knew Mandy from many moons ago.

On the larger scale of things we had Giygas (Earthbound), the various deities from things like Adventure Time and Gravity Falls, and the Nergal lineage was hinted to be linked to the Jahad entities from Hellboy. Lots happening all at once and no real need to go further than that for the time. As you've seen with all the comics of late, it's easy to go absolutely nowhere with absolutely anything and leave all the plot threads unresolved.

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Mother Arrive

I have no concrete scripts, no. I didn't write a bunch ahead of time, preferring to focus on what was then and there so that it got my full attention. However I did have many story points planned and if the series diverged into a period of time set in this era, I'd have focused on a few parts of Mimi's early life.

One would be her mother taking her to a specialist when she was around the age of 1 or 2, exhibiting the early signs of her powers. In this version of Earth, future superheroes (especially kids of existing superbeings) would undergo a test called a SHADE - a Super-Human Ability Determination & Evaluation test. This would catalogue and classify their abilities and the strength of said abilities. Young Mimi would be prone to making objects vanish in and out of existence, brief spurts of teleportation and general environmental manipulation. She would be classified and evaluated as a type of superbeing called a 'Zoner', whose powers allow them to warp reality around them. Very rare, very powerful and occasionally, very very dangerous. Blossom deliberately avoids raising Mimi's parentage with the specialist(s)

Another would of course be how we go to where we were, with Him and his initial invasion of demonic entities tearing down the life the Powerpuffs used to enjoy on the eve of their graduation from high school. Here we would learn that while the three sisters were staying together and trying to juggle tertiary education options with their role as perennial super heroes and global defenders, Dexter would be leaving to likely study either somewhere like MIT on the opposite end of the country or better yet, somewhere like CERN in Europe where his talents would be of greatest use. We'd also find out that for some time now, Blossom and Dexter have been separated. This would likely have been due to improper work/superlife balance and Blossom's growing concerns that while she and her sisters' powers grew as they did, Dexter was still a human and prone to being caught up in it all and hurt. If anything, she'd have done the dumping. Come the day of the big graduation and here's Him to turn their world on end and put an end to those (mostly) happy future plans. We could go anywhere after that, but those are some starting points.

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Bloody woes and Ray ban bros

Got it, I already asked you something there and in Mother arrives.

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Mother Arrive

Griddles, Do you have any scripts for scenes regarding the age of heroes Mimi is from? This was the first ever exposure I had to Spawn, long before I ever found out about the comics. This actually lead me to read more comics outside of Marvel and Dc. Speaking off, I was wondering, If you had creative control of this story from the start, what other media would you have made relevant for the story?
We have comic stuff (spawn, redeemer and other superheroes) and cartoon stuff (PPG, Danny phantom, Samurai Jack, etc) but if you could, which other media would you have made relevant for the plot? Would you have added Anime stuff? Web comic stuff? What would you have liked to add to grim tales to make the story more richer?

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Bloody woes and Ray ban bros

Please come back? 🙏

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Bloody woes and Ray ban bros

3 years since an update, is it safe to say this comic is dead?

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Bloody woes and Ray ban bros

Come over to the page called "Mine" back at the start of the comic. I've been such a huge fan of this story/characters since I was in middle school and never liked where it ended up going, and especially disappointed that it's now an abandoned project. I really enjoyed reading your input on where the story should have gone, the unfortunate behind-the-scenes, etc., because it's all interesting and well-done. Maybe he was more handsome in this alt timeline? More mature? No pressure or anything but seeing as we have not gotten any kind of Grim Tales content in these last years, I am hungry for new lore.
Especially if it comes from you, the actual writer. Whenever you feel like giving us that great gift (and it is entirely your choice) of actual good content, feel free to share it here so that we can all cope with the loss of such a great story, by reading your material.

Again, no pressure or anything.

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Bloody woes and Ray ban bros

1. Early in the Further Orientation plot for Mimi, there's a random page after she defeats Mina the Vampire Girl where shes's shown uploading images of herself onto Facebook, which her father approves of. This coincided with a picture on Bleed's DeviantArt page of Mimi in a skimpy pink bikini. This was obviously not in the page scripts and not only did it make no sense (Facebook in the Underworld after the humans were essentially wiped out?) but it broke the narrative flow of the comic as we were meant to be focusing on Mimi dealing with her powers and a sense of loss. I told Bleed to not include this page. He refused, initially citing it as some sort of reference to a current affairs story in his home country about young girls getting in trouble for their social media posts. I said that still didn't make sense (i.e. he was lying) and stood firm. So he fired me on the spot, saying it was 'too much drama'. The page was initially uploaded to Snafu using a title that later got it filtered when the site migrated to here, and now it exists using a title referencing Facebook terms of service. It was never referenced again in the comic, and it was phenomenally stupid. But Bleed did many of his impulsive edits to pages over the years, that was just the final straw for that particular camel's back...

2. That would be a very long post but yes, Him tore the boundaries down and then left the door open so to speak for various powerful entities to encroach on Earth over Mimi's formative years. He reclaimed her not long before Earth was locked off to prevent full dimensional erosion. Whoever was left behind on Earth now has to fend for themselves...

3. Anything is possible, but Blossom had a very important role to play in the story going forward. Had a big reveal planned for her in particular, and how it relates to Mimi's motivation.

4. Yes, 100% Her existence defies the story outright, as Mimi is supposed to be sterile due to the overwhelming and crippling nature of her powers, and Junior is a reaper and cannot give new life. It's against his very nature. But no, here she is, and she's only there because her creator bought enough smut from Bleed to win his ear. Dealing with Bleed means juggling the risks of his impulses. Nonetheless, I could have and would have make Jewel work and work well. I just never got the chance.

5. Timmy Turner. And in all likelihood, no. Mandy managed to secure an affiliation with the dark fairies as a result, but Timmy was likely one of countless casualties of Him's warpath.

Re: SNAFU - Grim Tales from Down Below - Bloody woes and Ray ban bros

Thanks for the answers. Do you have actual plot points regarding why earth is locked off? Any details you could share regarding this?

3. Would Jr ever meet any of the heroic survivors of the betrayal in your version of the story? Like Blossom or some other heroes?

4. Was Jewel a non canon character before?

5. Who was Jrs dad in your version of the story?
